I glue one end of the gunwale to the upper most edge of the hull, keeping it in line with one edge of the deck cap. Once the first glue dries, I bend the gunwale around the rest of the canoe's edge, gluing as I go, until it meets the deck cap on the other end of the boat. I trim off any excess, and sand the joint smooth. Then, repeat the other side.
